We’ve had a root through our homes for sale to select some characterful country homes on the market. Because, who doesn’t like dreaming of packing it all in for a simple rural life in a well-designed home?

How Green, Kent

This four-bedroom house occupies the north wing of How Green House, a lauded Arts and Crafts building designed by Robert Weir Schultz and completed in 1905. In the 1970s the house was extended to a design by architect Norman Engleback, who retained characterful original features like the Pithers stove and inglenook fireplace, oak-panelled walls and parquet flooring.

Assington, Suffolk

The cavernous, sprawling proportions of this barn in Suffolk have been celebrated in architect David Nossiter’s conversion of the 5,500 sq ft space. The exposed beams and brickwork serve up original character, and stand in pleasing contrast with the modern intervention, defined by poured concrete floors and bespoke joinery.

Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire

This characterful Grade-II* listed house was once a village hall, with parts of the structure dating from the 13th and 16th centuries.

The period backdrop has been elegantly added to by its current owners, who have introduced lime-plastered walls throughout, and chalky paints for a modern interpretation of a country interior.

Pednor, Buckinghamshire

The owner of this cottage in the Chiltern Hills extended a wood store and garages that were part of the original design of the house, done in 1927. The resulting open-plan kitchen, dining and family room has vaulted ceilings and exposed roof trusses, making for a spatially interesting addition.

The house is well-located near a selection of excellent schools, while the surrounding countryside, being an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, makes for great walking country. Put on your hiking boots and enjoy the clean, fresh air.

Wootton Rivers, Marlborough, Wiltshire

This converted barn sits within two acres of land and landscaped gardens in the Wiltshire countryside. The current owners have imbued the restoration and design of the building into a four-bedroom house with their own personal expression, making for a fun yet elegant space.
