Our recent chat with fashion editor Holly Swayne for our ‘My Modern House’ series left us impressed by Emil Eve Architects’ space-savvy refurbishment, which is housed in a Victorian conversion in Stoke Newington. We’ve trawled our current listings to select an edit of six London homes that maximise space.

Hightrees House, London SW12

The immaculate restoration of this two-bedroom apartment in a well-maintained Art Deco block near Clapham Common is the work of its current architect owners, who sought to reconfigure the flat to maximise space and storage. The outcome features an extended kitchen to accommodate integrated appliances, concealed storage in the master bedroom and a pull-down bed, which can transform the dining room into a second bedroom.

Wisteria Road, London SE13

Design-led property group Frame overhauled this terraced house in south east London, installing a broad lateral feel to the two-bedroom flat on the first floor. The space feels airy and light thanks to a neutral-hued colour scheme, large original sash windows and stripped floorboards.

Cyntra Place, London E8

Space in this flat, housed in an 1890 grandfather-clock factory near London Fields, is allocated between one bedroom and a large open-plan living area. Clever design features like a recessed built-in daybed and integrated worktop and bench make best use of the footage.

Milner Square, London N1

The open-plan kitchen and living space in this one-bedroom apartment within the Barnsbury Square Conservation has a generous sense of scale thanks to floor-to-ceiling sash windows with original shutters. High ceilings throughout and a Juliette balcony in the living area establish an airy feel, while a shared rear garden is a welcome rarity in this part of town.

Sladen Place, London E5

This bijou detached house was completed in 2015 according to an ingenious design by architects Adam Ogilvy, Richard MacRae and Ellie DeGory of OMDA. A clever utilisation of a small plot, the house features space-saving details like sliding doors, while also offering outdoor space courtesy of a first-floor balcony.

Nevill Road, London N16

For this two-bedroom house in Stoke Newington, architects Bradley Van Der Straeten designed a birch-ply structure, which forms the core of the property. A mezzanine bedroom sits on the top floor, below which is a double-volume living space that is filled with light from a 4m-high oak-framed window.
