The architectural design for the Xiasha Technology and Culture Exchange Centre is thought of as one continuous composition that embraces Jinsha Lake and the surrounding landscape and carefully places the buildings with in it. The geometry of the Jinsha Lake and its coastline are the initial reference point for the establishment of new topography and series of landscape forms that rise up as contours from the ground and water levels. These landscape forms not only contain functional elements of each building but they are also reminiscent of the landscape forms and spaces that are typical of Hangzhou.
Like Hangzhou’s landscape, the project is not about creating a singular iconic building or an element sitting within a space. It is about the overall built form and landscape form coming together as an iconic composition. The idea of an iconic composition rather than an a singular object while creating a unique image for the Xiasha District also establishes a sequence of public spaces that relate to the scale of a new district centre.
It establishes a place with an enduring identity rather than an object. The approach of making a collective of building forms gives each functional element within the cultural complex its own identity while the composition of forms has both a unique identity on a grand urban scale when perceived from a distance and also on a more intimate human scale when experienced close up. As important as the buildings themselves are the spaces in between and the circulation routes they define that allow people to constantly pass through the complex and integrate it into the movement patterns of the city.
The project extends across two separate sites with the Grand Theatre and Multi Purpose Hall fronting onto Jinsha Lake. The other site is to the north of Jinsha Road and contains the Public Library and Conference Centre facing the new Culture Square and the Bookstore, Science Museum and Youth Centre at the rear.
