The shelves only stay up thanks to concrete blocks, bricks, a glass vase and magazine
file boxes propping up one end. The Russian architect and designer El Lissitzky, known
for his abstract geometric shapes that combined both the 2D and 3D discipline have
had great influence.
The objects in the shelving are used for creating a dynamic composition, comparable to
the method of creating a collage. Each composition is unique and defines the overall
aesthetic of the shelve.
Besides using objects like bricks which are widely available Remmelts also picked up
one-off objects from flea markets, charity shops and building sites. That way he’s forced
to make new compositions with each shelf. An ash wood frame forms one side of the
piece, while the shelves require objects to be placed on the other side to hold them in
position.
