The Sun In MY Room
Camera obscura is one of the oldest human device to depict the outside world. Although
photography was invented long after the invention of camera obscura, it can be said that
the realization of the device was promising the emergence of photography. In
renaissance era, artists used it to understand the concept of perspective. They tried to
transform the three dimensional world onto their two dimensional campus by tracing the
light with their paint brushes. Camera obscure is, in a way, a time machine for me. It
allows me to experience what renaissance artists experienced. Instead of the paints and
brushes, I use light sensitive papers to transform the light into photographic imagery.
One day after I finished making my self-portrait in my room camera obscura, I found that
there was a strange white dot on the wall. The room lights were on by then. I was
wondering what that was for a while and realized that it was a projected image of sun
coming from the pinhole on the window. That’s how I first encountered the picture of the
sun. The sun came into my room.
To capture the sun on various kind of photographic papers, I feel like I am sculpting the
light coming into my room from the pinhole to create the image that expresses the
essence of the subject. In Japanese Bonsai, the art of dwarf tree, artists alter a tree to
reveal true nature of tree. They cut and re-shape the dwarf tree to its simplest form
without leaving a trace of human hand so that viewers can appreciate and understand
what tree truly is. These pictures of the sun are the results of my efforts of sculpting and
transmuting the sunlight in my camera obscure and my room to represent the shape of
the sun in its own nature.
After I saw the sun on my wall, I started following it through out years and by doing so I
realized that I was also following the seasons. Spring, summer, fall and winter, as sun
changes its position in the sky, the nature changes. Leafs bloom on a tree in spring and
fall in autumn. It all happens in the world outside yet at the same time it happens in my
room too as a mirrored image of the world upside down.
