The Fency Chairs are a set of garden furniture recycled from leftover material of the garden fence
construction. The architect, as the owner of this small garden, designed a new wooden fence and
deck to replace the old rusted iron fence.

木栅栏的竖向木条和横向龙骨,45x25的硬木木方;
木平台的地板,90x15的硬木木板;

After the wooden fence and deck are finished, some battens are leftover, and the architect wants to build
a pair of outdoor furniture with them. Three kinds of battens are used during the construction of the
garden renovation:
1. Anti-corrosion pine square (40x40mm)
2. Lauan batten (45x15mm)
3. Lauan board (90x15mm)
The Fency Chairs use all the three kinds of battens, and the restriction on the dimension of material has
regulated the design, with consistent fabrication logic between the wooden fence and the chairs. In the
primary structure level, the anti-corrosion pine (floor joists of the deck) is the leg of the chairs. In the
second structure level, the lauan batten (slatted wooden fence) is the main frame of the chairs. In the
envelop level, the lauan board serves as surface material for both the deck and the chairs.
The Fency Chairs consist of two mirrored chairs. With a dismountable chair-back, Fency Chairs can
be transformed into three configurations to fit different scenarios:
Two separate chairs;
One chair with an attached side table, and one tea table;
One long chair with an attached side table.

The Fency Chairs use traditional Chinese Sunmao joinery for its structure, and they are made with the
architect’s own hands.
