In 2011 Bloem and Lemstra Architects won a competition for the design of a new villa in the dunes of Bergen aan Zee, a small town at the Dutch coast approximately 1 hour driving from Amsterdam.  We recently received some photos of this project, a contemporary house defined by an optimum indoor-outdoor connection. Here is the official description from the project developer: “On the ground floor a direct connection between the living room and the garden and the lounge area on the floor above exploits the great view at the dunes and the sea. A big void, with a tree in the middle, generates a connection between these two areas. Several terraces surround the villa to make sure the occupants can enjoy the sun during the morning, afternoon and evening. Natural stone walls arise from the dune valley and shape the guest residence in the basement. This part of the house, designed for friends and visitors, has its own charm and literally forms the foundation of the villa. The use of natural rocks emphasizes the idea of a base that evolves out of the hilly dunes. Due to the white plaster walls, the wooden shutters, the natural stone walls and the indoor three, the luxury villa gets an atmosphere alike an Ibiza residence.
