Until now it’s been one hell of a journey for Melburnians who fancied experiencing the beer-fuelled fun of Munich’s Oktoberfest, but now they can enjoy the festivities closer to home, and all year round. Munich Brauhausoccupies a former goods shed in South Wharf, giving Techne Architecture and Interior Design all the room they needed to recreate an Antipodean version of a cavernous German beer hall in a prime waterfront location.
The massive venue can cater for 900 thirsty folk, with most seated in the main dining area modelled on the traditional brauhaus layout of long communal tables. A central feature has been created from an arrangement of antlers, with many further woodland elements throughout – not least a rather large tree. Away from the rowdiness there are two further zones. The Jager Bar area is recognisable by the imposing log wall, patterned to mimic a forest floor, and is designed to ease patrons in to Munich Brauhaus. The Wunder Bar (try to say that without affecting a German accent) looks down on the action from a mezzanine level, and there’s also a private function room in a quiet ground floor corner. Wunderbar indeed…
