The new Wayfinder Hotel in Newport, Rhode Island, is as charming as New England retreats ought to be. Rather than creating a space in town that stands out, hotelier Phil Hospod wanted to build one that blended in. To do this, he banded together a team of local creatives to conceptualize the experience throughout the hotel—from decor and art to food and beverage.

Although Newport is a quintessential New England town, don't expect to find an abundance of nautical stripes and shiplap at the Wayfinder. Instead, the design team—helmed by New York City–based Reunion Goods & Services—was inspired by the natural beauty of Newport’s rocky coastline and the warmth of the town itself. From bold color schemes that mimic the horizon line to muted tones that represent the moodiness of the New England coastline, every choice was designed to make you feel fully immersed in the surrounding landscape. To learn the secrets behind these fresh color choices, we chatted with Reunion's Carrie Dessertine, Dana Jaasund, and Laura Flam about our four favorite spaces:

In an effort to make the hotel's common space feel homey and warm, the team contrasted the lobby’s neutral terrazzo floor with a soothing deep blue hue on the ceiling, bringing intimacy to the space through the compression of light. The neutrals fall back and are punctuated with saturated pops of color to create an inviting energy. “The bold mustard fireplace centers the room [and the] modern art, and the rich texture of the lime-washed lower wall breaks up the space,” says Laura.

For the restaurant, the team used vivid colors that represent the horizon line, like the teal bar face and the burnt orange leather of the banquettes. “These are the colors of the ocean and the setting sun connecting at the horizon," Carrie notes. "The light floor and ceiling represent a larger mass of the pale sand and sky retreating.” They then added dark trim and deep blue O&G chairs to represent the Atlantic Ocean shoreline, while leopard-print upholstery adds a playful pop to the space.

In a guest room, muted tones like sage green and warm whites give a sense of comfort.

“The guest rooms provide a tranquil, homey respite for guests,” says Dana. “The colors are both airy and moody, a contrast that sets the New England coast apart from others.” Freshening up the spaces and bringing natural light into the rooms was the main goal in order for guests to feel at home. With that said, the rooms are more subdued with fewer pops of color, making them less of a spectacle than the public spaces throughout the hotel. They used a muted teal and softer hues to avoid overpowering the space; the color is a clear nod to the sea and the dewiness of New England mornings.

The team wanted the space between the lobby and the restaurant to feel consistent, so they continued to play with this metaphor of using colors to represent the rocky Atlantic coastline. “The palette shifts slightly between the spaces, where the restaurant has some brighter energy to reflect the Mission Restaurant vision,” says Laura. “The stained blue library chairs on the color-blocked orange, black, and white flat-weave rug introduce the restaurant experience and lead your eye into the space.”
