Our guest this week on The Modern House Podcast is Lucinda Chambers, ex fashion director of British Vogue and now entrepreneur, heading fashion brand Colville and online shop Collagerie. Listen to the podcast here.

Chambers was born in 1959 and spent her childhood under the care of a serial renovator mother, who made ends meet by moving to a new house every 18 months, working on a complete overhaul and then selling on. The only search criteria for the family’s next move was to be within walking distance of the Brompton Oratory and Harrods, where Chambers and her mother would visit, tape measure in hand, to try on clothes that they would then copy at home with fabric sourced on the Edgware Road.

It was these two experiences – of hands-on renovating and DIY fashion projects – that proved formative for Chambers, and no doubt why her career at Vogue was defined by the same creative resourcefulness, idiosyncratic flair and style that she has applied to her interior projects. Her own home in Shephard’s Bush, which, in utter contrast to her peripatetic childhood, she has lived in with her husband for over 30 years, can be described as one of her shoots often was: a lively mix of colour, pattern, fabric and accessories to the effect of being at once bold and understatedly cool, an effortless product of style that’s hard to come by.

Tune in now to hear Chambers reflect on her childhood spent
moving home, her arrival and career at Vogue and her life-long love of fashion
and interiors, as well as her top three living spaces across the world, which
include an Andalusian hotel and a treehouse. Make sure to subscribe to the
podcast so that you never miss an episode, and if you could rate and review us,
we’d be more than grateful. Happy listening.
