STG Design realized the modern office design for the 3M headquarters, a scientifically-minded manufacturing company, located in Austin, Texas. Based on a community-centric design created to provide diverse spaces that drive employee innovation, productivity, and company culture, 3M set out with clear goals about what they wanted to accomplish. As both a destination for training and engaging spaces to support a range of work styles, security and accessibility were an essential part of this design. The lobby space as a first impression is designed to create a sense of volume and spaciousness for circulation between different points of access, bright and welcoming to employees and to visitors of the exhibit and conferencing spaces. Areas that required open access for visitors were given separate entrances, while employee access to the open office and flex spaces required a monitored security entrance with card key access. The overall look and feel of the project promote a healthy workplace environment that fosters a sense of community. With its unique lobby features, breakout collaboration spaces, and fitness area, as well as a cafe and cafeteria, employees have access to a fluid space unified by harmonious colors and finishes. Working within budget constraints, STG Design collaborated with 3M to create a new type of modern open office environment that would aid in the transition between the more experienced employees while attracting the next generation of talent.
