Inspired by his experience of monumental architecture discovered whilst travelling through Europe and the Americas, Daniel Boddam’s debut furniture collection explores architecture of the ancient world in modern design.
Titled ‘Monument’, the collection, designed by the Sydney-based architect, is a tribute to considered simplicity, pure form geometry and the permanence of natural materials including oak, brass, steel and Carrara marble.
‘M’ round dining table was inspired by Chichén Itzá, Mexico. The temple’s architectural elements are infused into the table’s design – the American Oak base echoes the pyramidal form and the slender metallic mid-section lifts the floating round top to express the duality of earth and sky. Each part – base, support and top – is distinct in form and material a practice reminiscent of the simplified and streamlined works of sculptor Constantine Brancusi. Le Corbusier‘s modular man and the Golden Section define the proportions of this platform.
The ‘M’ coffee table is a study in scale conceived as a simple rectangular mass hollowed out at key points to create architectural details. Steps are carved from one corner, a ‘room’ is created on another as a recess for books and objet with an oculus carved from the ‘ceiling’ bringing light to the interior like a miniature Pantheon.
The beauty of the Parthenon’s harmonious proportions, achieving a certain lightness, and its clever illusory use of curved lines to achieve visually straight columns inspired Monument’s ‘M’ Chair.
The Monument collection is available by appointment from Daniel Boddam’s studio in Sydney’s Darlinghurst and online.
