Dinosaur Designs’ Creative Directors, Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy, have launched their newest collection titled Sand. Sand explores the natural beauty and textures of fine rock and mineral particles. The palette is earthy and matt in finish, comprising of tan, brown and white with streaks of red and black. New art-range castings and patterns have been developed which allow sand to be mixed into the resin, drawing on rhythmic forms found in sandstone.
Olsen comments, “Our approach considered the forms and palette of sand. Sand takes us back to our childhood, when we use to fill jars with beautiful layers of sand. This layering effect inspired the development of our new art-range palette”.
The collection features a series of stone-inspired homeware pieces, which resemble graphic sandstone formations and look as if they have been created by nature. In the jewellery collection, brass Ruffle Chokers and bracelets create statement looks with armour-like plates and new earrings have been developed, featuring rock inspired forms, raw but with a polished finish.
Olsen and Ormandy shot the Sand campaign with Tim Georgeson, a photo-journalist and director who shoots for National Geographic, and together they chose the raw beauty of Sydney’s Maroubra beach as the location. Stylist Mark Vassallo also worked on the campaign with hair by Michelle McQuillan and make-up by Victoria Baron. The pieces were modelled by Georgeson’s daughter Nova Orchid, and Camille Ormandy, the daughter of Olsen and Ormandy.
Georgeson’s photo essay creates the sense that the Sand collection is an organic extension of the sandstone cliffs that wrap the Australian coastline. For drama, Olsen designed special pieces of metal armour, which clasp around the body, creating a visual exploration of the balance between the futuristic and fluid forms created by sand in nature. The resulting images are as dramatic and arresting as the collection itself.
