Italian wallpaper purveyors Wall & Decò have released their 2019 contemporary collection. Inspired by the concept of “No Barriers,” the collection aims to transcend established cultural and stylistic limitations. Specifically, American writer Kurt Vonnegut Jr’s assertion that “all moments, past, present and future always have existed, always will exist,” served as a jumping off point. Each new design evokes the coexistence of various creative languages and disciplines, from minimalism to globalism, in its own way. All manner of artistic mediums, from photography to painting to Trompe l’oeil, are made to look as though they were made to cover a wall. Optical art, cubism, irony, and cartoon influences all make an appearance, in an effort to evoke progressive anarchy. My Africa by Antonio Marras pairs primal geometry with bold brush strokes, while Instant Panorama/Reloaded by Studiopepe uses abstract grids to add transparent layers to classic landscapes. The ton sur ton technique of playing with different textures to create an overall monochrome look recurs throughout the collection. Merrigio by Serena Confalonieri demonstrates it with a symmetrical, salmon pink design, while Vers I’Est by Giovanni Pesce does a similar thing with burgundy non-woven fabric and vinyl. The orchestration of overlapping layers contributes a 3D value to vertical surfaces.
