Asia’s iconic luxury department store Lane Crawford will launch a collaborative collection with LOCAL DESIGN during Art Basel Hong Kong 2019, continuing its commitment to recognizing emerging talents with the Creative Call Out programme. Multi-disciplinary creative and founder of LOCAL DESIGN Emma Elizabeth curated the collection, choosing eight Australian and New Zealand design talents for inclusion. Highlights include the Ode collection by Adam & Arthur, a collaboration between Australian industrial designer Adam Goodrum and Parisian Arthur Seigneur, known for making furniture in the meticulous style of 17th century French decorative arts. A mirror of brass-tinted glass is surrounded by colourful, geometric hand laid rye straw marquetry on hoop pine. Inspired by the abstract world and modernism, each mirror is unique thanks to the custom dyed natural straw, each with individual colour combinations and textures. Adam Goodrum’s Chatterbox also features, inspired by Utzon’s design process for the Sydney Opera House – cutting a sphere into segments and reconfiguring a new form. Goodrum applied the same process to a rectangular prism, forming an exclusive shape for Lane Crawford. Taking inspiration from boat building techniques and yacht design, the AVISO Armchair by Skeehan x Stellan features clean, controlled curves and generous proportions. A minimal ash timber frame anchors the chair’s sculptural silhouette, padded by aniline leather cushions. Premium natural materials combined with considered craftsmanship build a tactile experience that celebrates the ritual of relaxed seating. Sydney-based ADesignStudio features with their Crackle Vase. The object is both provocative and ornamental, towing a fine line between strength and fragility. The custom crackle glass finish appears fractured and tenuous, balancing on a curved base as if defying gravity to maintain a delicate balance. Our final favourite is Stop and Smell the Roses by Melbourne-based Volker Haug Studio, a doorstop that doubles as a single-stem vase, encouraging small everyday gestures over grandiose statements on special occasions only. The vase comes in sand-cast aluminium or gunmetal with a coloured dipped-rubber base. The collaboration between LOCAL DESIGN and Lane Crawford will launch on March 25 as part of its Artistic Expression programme at the Pacific Place home store, furthering the connection between art and design.
