Designed by Gibson Karlo for DesignByThem, the August collection is an exploration of intersecting volumes and articulated geometries. An exercise in restraint, the design balances a minimal form with emphasised junctions to create a distinct, bold and inviting collection of armchairs and lounges.
“The August collection initially began with a number of small sketches of intersecting colours, shapes and blocks during what is often a rare opportunity to have some unstructured and uninterrupted time where we can just freely sketch”, explain Nicholas Karlovasitis & Sarah Gibson, designers & DesignByThem co-founders.
It was during this time that a sketch of intersecting rectangular blocks grabbed their interest and subsequent explorations of these shapes were carried out. These blocks then began to slowly transform into primary forms that would develop into the August range.
Sarah and Nicholas were drawn to primary forms and the idea of an object being made from simple intersecting geometries, especially if those geometries appeared to be rigid and unsupported by other structures while being made from soft materials. The fabric and blanket stitching detail become integral to achieving a soft yet crisp form.
“A fundamental part of the design is to highlight and exaggerate how the aesthetic and any decorative elements are driven by the function of its assembly and construction,” said Nicholas and Sarah. Rather than having the seat and backrest simply end or integrate into the sides, they become extended beyond the arms, creating a visual point of interest that emphasises the block-like forms that initially captured the design duo. The fabric and blanket stitching detail became integral to achieving a soft yet crisp form.
“For us, this range captures the balance of simplicity, character and understated playfulness that we aim to achieve in our designs,” conclude Nick and Sarah. “We wanted to create a design that people are drawn to, that creates a sense of wonder and yet is flexible enough to be used in a variety of applications.”
