Today, we’re excited to share with you the first print issue of The Modern House Magazine, a 135-page exploration into modern forms of living, design and architecture. Featuring originally commissioned photography, opinion pieces, long-form writing, interviews, Q&As and more, we survey what it means to live in a thoughtful, considered way, both in and out of the home.
Regular visitors to themodernhouse.com will be familiar with our award-winning online features, which now spans interiors features, a food series, gardening and cultural tips, a podcast and a YouTube channel. But, maybe it’s because our founders, Matt Gibberd and Albert Hill, started their careers as magazine editors, that we’ve always had an itch for print – “it was only a matter of time,” they both say.
And so our first issue was conceived to bring our readers our most comprehensive editorial offering to date, with all-new stories that survey everything from food and travel, interiors to design, and art to gardening. This issue includes house visits to Studio Nicholson founder Nick Wakeman, architect Sarah Wigglesworth and Jeremy Till, head of Central Saint Martins, and YBA artist Keith Coventry, plus we check on in two buyers to see how they’re getting on in their Walter Segal self-build house in south east London.
Then we make our way across the UK, first to the far reaches of Scotland to see how an environmental rewilding project is also shaking up the country’s old-fashioned décor traditions. In Tynemouth, we fall in love with a humble beach shack selling grilled fish, while in Sussex, organic grower Claire Ratinon shares some tips to getting your first veg patch off the ground.
Also, what are design critic Alice Rawsthorn’s top ten book recommendations? How do we build sustainable homes? Who are they young names shaking up the design world? Find out inside The Modern House Magazine No. 1.
