Architecture Fragments by Spanish architect Marià Castelló is an exhibition of objects that bring dimension, atmosphere, and spatial understanding to 2D architectural documentation. A collection of works, made mostly from concrete and plaster, sit as homogenous artworks revealing the nuances of buildings mostly designed by Castelló’s architecture studio.

The majority of the works were created between 2019 and 2020, paying tribute to the historical and contemporary architectural heritage of the island of Formentera, Spain. The pieces each showcase the effects of light and shadow and the relationship between hollow and solid forms, allowing audiences to view architecture in a new and exciting way.

Most of the works are constructed out of a single material to emphasize the harmony of the reference architectures. Mainly concrete and plaster has been used, in moments dyed with pigment to create different soft hues. Mortars of different compositions, made with locally extracted or recycled aggregates, rainwater, and other natural elements with a low environmental footprint. A regulated module of 20x5x20cm creates a series that is visually consistent despite large differences in form and colour.

“The daily tools for the practice of Architecture are put at the service of an artistic project that shows the entrails of wonderful buildings,” says Marià. “Sections, plans and other projections intertwine to explain extraordinary relationships that are hidden from the naked eye.”

The exhibition of objects highlights the expansive field of opportunities existing within the architectural field, as these snapshots push us to consider design through a refreshing new lens.
