Artists Collaboration Studio (ACS) has brought conversation and style to their project Izin Dom beauty salon in Kazan, Russia. The 67-square-metre interior has been designed with a homely atmosphere, the studio describing it as a place “where visitors go not only for beauty services, but also for communication.”

The project’s main goal was to create a space that has both a comforting atmosphere while encouraging conversation. The studio explains they “kept the space as open as possible, creating interaction between the manicure area and the hairdressing salon so that guests can simultaneously get different services and communicate.”

The interior is brought to life with natural materials implemented by ACS in unusual ways. The waiting area has been completely covered in timber mosaics creating a soft scheme that designers hope envelops and relaxes all those that spend some time within its walls. The studio goes on to outline – “Oak wall panels contrast with the rough texture of concrete, softening the brutality of the interior.”

The vivid blue centre bench becomes the main character within the room, injecting bright colour into the otherwise muted palette. It’s curved, soft edges and accompanying curved armchairs stand in juxtaposition to the rigid concrete surfaces that surround it.

A reflective oculus transforms a typical shelf into an object that looks as if it could have fallen from outer space. The suspended circular shape houses a collection of products ready for customers to purchase – a small element that brings ample personality and character to the design. Elena Khairullina-Volkova’s artwork brings expressive shape and colour to the industrial face of a concrete wall. The piece speaks to the fluidity of this new style of salon, capturing its desire to “become a trendsetter in this field of beauty”.
