Inverleigh Farmhouse by Studio Esteta preserves the agricultural charm of an established estate, honouring family history and connection to place.
With a second generation now in residence, it felt like the right time to rethink the original home to suit the family’s needs. Collaborating with Studio Esteta the owners wanted a design that allowed for the dual aspects of a working farm and home life. “Every material, surface, and spatial decision was made with practicality in mind—from mud-tolerant entryways to robust finishes that could handle the wear and tear of rural living,” Studio Esteta co-director Felicity Slattery says.

The single-level home was renovated with the aim of providing durability and long-term functionality for day-to-day activities while also offering the flexibility to accommodate immediate and visiting extended family. Borrowing from the earthy tones of the farmland, hard-wearing wire-brushed and matt-lacquered European oak flooring, painted timber panelling, and stone floors and countertops in the main service areas adds textural warmth. “Natural materials were carried into key functional areas such as the bathroom, where sandstone elements link back to the surrounding landscape. Aged brass hardware and soft linen curtains were incorporated not only for their utility but for their subtle reference to a traditional farmhouse,” Slattery adds.

Capturing views, the plan also strategically addresses the prevailing weather patterns and conditions. “Large openings, covered outdoor areas, and passive design principles help ensure the home remains comfortable and efficient throughout the year,” Studio Esteta co-director Sarah Cosentino comments. This understanding of place and purpose informs each of the alterations and additions carried out by the studio.

Carefully organised to provide comfort and seclusion for the family, the replan establishes separate areas for retreat away from the central living area and from the farmhouse’s daily operations. “To the north, the main family wing opens out under a generous pitched ceiling, creating a striking sense of spatial volume. This soaring ceiling not only enhances natural light and ventilation but also strengthens the home’s visual and emotional connection to the rural setting. Within this wing, the kitchen, dining, and living areas come together as the communal heart of the home—open, welcoming, and framed by views of the surrounding paddocks.”

In contrast to this, the southern wing—off a central hallway and breezeway—“offers a quieter, more introspective atmosphere. Here, the ceiling heights are deliberately lowered, creating a sense of intimacy and retreat”. These areas provide a level of solitude that counterbalance the open communal spaces.Merging practicality with enduring character, great care has been taken to introduce elements that bring light and energy to the homestead, which continues to function both as a family home and the operational centre of a working farm.
