The Sydney home, built in 2007, is a typical example of an Australian kit house, whereby the different elements are pre-cut and drilled, then assembled on-site into a simple, minimalist structure. “While structurally robust, the interior layout lacked flow and tactile richness,” says Church. “It provided a solid shell but required a bold and expressive interior overhaul to reflect the personality and lifestyle of its current owners.”
Her concept was to create an interior that balanced areas for entertaining and gathering with more private, restful spaces. “The clients envisioned a space that felt footloose and fancy free – somewhere to eat, drink, and be merry in the company of friends and family,” she says. “We sought to create a space that was both high-functioning and high-impact, rich in personality, and with a strong emphasis on entertaining and everyday enjoyment.”
