Having made waves in Byron Bay, Light Years Asian Diner has arrived in Perth’s CBD with a design that balances bold character, coastal charm and urban sophistication.Led by the award-winning Studio Plenty, in collaboration with renowned designer Sarah Ellison Creative, the project marks a confident expansion of the restaurant brand – which also has venues in Newcastle, Noosa and Burleigh – while adapting its signature playfulness to a more cosmopolitan crowd on the west coast.

Set within Gordon Stephenson House, the new venue – with its large footprint, soaring ceilings and limited access to natural light – did present a few issues from the get-go when it came to creating an intimate atmosphere. But as Studio Plenty director Will Rathgeber explains, “our design approach embraced this challenge front to back – lighting, tone and texture all contributing to a harmonious gradient of light to dark, from open to intimate.”What the brief called for was something that would feel at home in a buzzing CBD, catering to tourists and locals, as well as a corporate lunch crowd. The team drew on the success of their Byron Bay fit-out but refined it to better suit the Perth locale. “Despite its scale, we approached Perth with a finer grain, breaking down playful textures, refining the fabric,” says Rathgeber.

A major spatial move was relocating the large radius bar to the centre of the 200-seat space – a shift that brought some clarity and balance to what had previously been a “cold, chaotic and out-of-proportion” layout. “The composition of seating typologies, lighting forms and reimagining the existing floor plan have allowed this venue to feel harmonious at capacity, and comfortable if first to be seated,” notes Rathgeber.Materials that star in this fit-out include dark terracotta finger tiles from Nagoya Mosaic-Tile and warm, earthy Inax Sugie Series Hanten tiles from Artedomus. Further to this, Studio Plenty was granted exclusive first use by Fibonacci to specify two of its new terrazzo releases – Llama and Not Terracotta – laid in a patchwork pattern at key points between restored hardwood floors. Paired with custom furniture and ambient lighting, the palette creates a textured and inviting environment for patrons and staff alike.

Studio Plenty’s philosophy – centred on a rejection of excess in favour of thoughtful, rational design – is evident throughout. “Our ideology is an antithesis to this mindset – simply put, ‘that’ll be plenty, cheers’,” says Rathgeber.Backed by the craftsmanship of One Eleven Group and layered with contemporary art contributions from Studio of the Sun, Perth’s Light Years Asian Diner doesn’t just follow the Byron Bay blueprint, it reimagines it – and does so with style and depth. In Rathgeber’s own words: “It’s a proud moment for us to see how this project has overcome such a cavernous and expansive shell to achieve an intimate, comfortable and varied dining experience.”
