Cult fashion retailer Above The Clouds has opened a slick new store on Collins Street in Melbourne’s CBD. Designed by Byron Bay-based Pattern Studio – helmed by couple Josh Cain and Lily Goodwin – the space occupies 320 square metres across two levels and is the brand’s first interstate outpost.Known for its curated selection of contemporary streetwear – with a mix of international labels such as Salomon and Adidas, as well as local outfits like Pseushi and Larriet – Above The Clouds has built a loyal following with offerings that are both elevated and accessible. The founders, Dimitri Calligeros and John Paul Wager, have always prioritised an aura of the unexpected, and in Pattern Studio they found a design ethos that aligned. “We had worked with the brand on their first store in Surry Hills,” says Goodwin. “They wanted something that felt in keeping with Sydney but that would excite Melburnians.”

Calligeros and Wager had inherited a recently refurbished tenancy, so the focus was on utilising existing elements while steering the space firmly in a new direction. “The former tenancy felt somewhat uninviting, at odds with the spirit of Above The Clouds,” says Goodwin. “We needed to flip that.” Pattern Studio’s first move was a structural one – by removing partitions on the facade, the team opened up the floor-to-ceiling windows and introduced light and airiness. “Suddenly there was a connection to the street,” she says. “This space now had a pulse.”The material sensibility of the interiors is clean and minimal, with a palette that draws on contrasting textures and geometries. Chrome and aluminium finishes nod to the store’s industrial bones, while custom furniture – off-kilter garment rails and display units in hues of lemon, cucumber and mandarin – inject a playful pop into the cool precision of the space. Sleek floating shelves, an angular point-of-sale unit and a simple geometric lamp by Marset contribute to an atmosphere that is both understated and edgy. “The excellence lies in the thinking and the restraint,” explains Goodwin. “Do enough to make a meaningful impact, nothing more.”

Speaking of impact, the boutique’s wow factor comes from the sculptural sneaker display that lies at the centre of the upper level. Circular and softly illuminated, the otherworldly ice-blue structure offers a 360-degree showcase for the footwear selection, which forms the backbone of the business. It’s an evolution of the Sydney store’s reverent eight-metre sneaker wall. “It’s shoppable on two sides,” says Goodwin. “It’s physical, playful. It invites you in.” As night falls, RGB LEDs transform the display into a beacon that appears to hover above the streetscape like an incandescent UFO.From a sustainability perspective, Above The Clouds aims to resist the fashion industry’s often wasteful habits. “We want to change the culture of full refits every three years,” says Goodwin. “We pushed the envelope to achieve a premium outcome, despite a more pared-back approach to the reworking.” By maximising suitable elements from the previous tenant’s fit-out and replacing only what was truly necessary, the project speaks to a broader ambition to create retail spaces that are at once sustainable, relevant and enduring.

Pattern Studio also subtly subverts retail norms in other ways. Fitting rooms – typically hidden away – are instead brought into the open, rendered as freestanding mirror-clad volumes. Generously sized and internally lined with raw strand board and plush carpet, the store’s change rooms tap into the brand’s unconventional but welcoming identity.“What I think makes Above The Clouds cool is that they’re so lovely,” says Goodwin. “They’ve created a space where 14-year-old skaters feel just as welcome as customers who might be shopping for really high-end goods. It looks elevated, but it doesn’t feel exclusive. They make the experience authentic and warm.”

For all its conceptual clarity and refined detailing, the boutique is both inviting and approachable, perfectly capturing the community focus that the streetwear retailer is celebrated for.
