For architect Pooja Bihani, whose latest Kolkata home explores wood as both experiment and muse, working with the material as a focal point became an invitation to push its expressive limits. “Wood is timeless. It can shift moods while still grounding a space,” she says. “What excites me is how the same material can be charred, carved, polished, or left raw, and each time it tells a completely new story.”

Tasked with designing an entire home anchored in one material, from walls and ceilings to floors, Bihani, founder of Kolkata-based studio Spaces & Design, spun 50 shades and 50 moods of wood into a single project. The name InGrained felt inevitable, echoing both the grain of timber and the idea of design etched deep into the 5,000-square goot residence's DNA.

The young family behind InGrained wanted a home that felt modern yet soulful, layered yet light, with just enough bohemian spirit to keep it playful. Bihani had carte blanche to dream big, and she did. "Each space became its own chapter in woody textures.” To counteract the sense of too much woodiness, she introduced veins of natural marble, touches of leather, and the tactility of textiles. The result is a home that reads like a curated gallery of textures with one central base. The effect is dramatic, crafted, but very lived-in.

From the very first step inside, the house makes its statement. Walls of shou sugi ban — charred timber — are paired with ribbed cement, creating a raw-meets-refined energy. It's a bold opener, like the first look on a runway, setting the mood for everything that follows.

At the heart of the Kolkata home, the living, dining, and bar areas merge into one sweeping expanse. The floor is a striking multi-marble grid, while wooden totems with built-in lights rise like sculptural models, tall and luminous, replacing the idea of chandeliers. Fluted panelling lends rhythm to the walls, while sweeping sofas and ombré-stained consoles layer in casual luxury. Two hand-carved consoles, in a bespoke ombré of rust over ash, double as storage and statement accessories. Styled vignettes with ceramics and botanicals add warmth and playfulness.

The terrace bar is perhaps the most theatrical of all. A charred-wood, leaf-shaped table etched with vein-like carvings commands the space, surrounded by olive green bar stools that glow against earthy walls. Behind them, patchwork marble tiles fold like draped fabric, giving stone the softness of silk. A scalloped gilt mirror reflects a swirling sculptural wall piece that recalls couture pleating.
Every zone has its own identity. The study is playful yet composed, with ochre cylindrical bookshelves that curve upward like pillars, their sculptural form softened by an open-pore ash wooden desk and a blush-toned chair. Wavy textures ripple across timber walls and ceiling, adding rhythm and whimsy to the space.

The powder room is atmospheric, wrapped in swirling green and rust-toned marble. A scalloped stone vanity becomes the focal point, while hand-painted cloud-like walls create an ethereal backdrop. Soft florals and ceramics bring intimacy to the moody composition.
The daughter's bedroom has a light and whimsical feel. Mint greens are paired with scalloped mirrors and graphic polka-dot and curvy forms, creating a touch of femininity.

Elsewhere, the den channels Afro-boho with carved cabinetry, rustic jute and rattan wallpapers, a dhurrie rug, and leafy patterned furniture that opens out to the greenery outside. The guest suite is cosmopolitan in moody blues, with stained wood, patterned cement tiles, and Missoni-inspired zigzags. The master suite, meanwhile, is pared back to understated luxury with leather-inlay panels, a freestanding carved marble tub, twin vanities, and breezy windows designed for golden-hour lounging.

The challenge for Bihani was to play around with a single material without making it feel monotonous and repetitive. It was like an experiment, hustling with different approaches. Every room pushed artisans to think more and stretch their limits of imagination. They created new prototypes, refined details, and engineered innovative finishes.
Beyond wood, InGrained came together through the work of over 60 Indian and international brands: lighting from Marici, Deltalights, Oorjaa, and Yasanche; furnishings from Skipper, Rugberry, and Decohome; art from Gallery Veda, Emami, Exhibit 320, and Inherited Arts Forum.
