Designer Nina Freudenberger finds her dream home for her family in a wooden house on the shores of Lake Montauk (Long Island, New York). A relaxed home with vintage pieces and design icons.Nina Freudenberger was high in the Italian Alps, photographing a project for her book Mountain House (Penguin Random House), when she received a call from her husband, Mike Larocca: she had found her dream vacation home on the far east of Long Island (New York).  “For her,” she recalls being told by the interior designer based in Los Angeles. The property that Larocca, a film and television producer and self-proclaimed “King of Zillow,” had found something truly exceptional: a contemporary wooden house on the shores of Lake Montauk. Given Freudenberger’s experience in transforming all types of homes, from ski chalets to beach cabins, the project seemed destined to become a reality.

In addition to five bedrooms and eight bathrooms in total, the building features a huge lawn-covered esplanade that extends to the waterfront. With two young children, that green space was an undisputed attraction. Not to mention the location: the couple owns a boat and practices surfing and fishing.  “There’s something about Montauk’s authenticity that catches my eye,” Freudenberger explains, citing the enclave’s maritime industry, its artistic legacy, and Native American history.

Despite the extraordinary surroundings, the house needed the Freudenberger touch.  “She was beautiful, but she had no personality,” he recalls.  "We had to give him some life." With the help of architect Michele Hugo and Sand & Sea Construction contractors, the couple set out to maximize views and smooth out the distribution, expanding the living room area (and removing the fireplace in the process) and updating the bathrooms and kitchen. White oak panels, embedded furniture, and other carpentry work by Justin Allen of Shepard Co. give warmth to the interiors and bring a nod to 1970s beach design, "Everything had to be quiet and relaxed to calm this cornered house," says Freudenberger.
