In contrast to a typical hardware collection, The Streaks maintains a focus on timber while incorporating patinated bronze for further richness. “I remember going to the YSG office for the first time and seeing the timbers lined up in a case on the wall,” says Emily Bradley, co-founder of Bankston. “Yasmine took me through them and I couldn’t believe that they were all natural timbers – unstained yet showcasing purples, oranges and reds.” From a manufacturing perspective, the large-scale use of timber presented a challenge, prompting Bankston to re-evaluate the lever mechanism for a refined outcome. The emerging bands – streaks crafted from timber finishes, grains and bronze inlays – give the collection its name. The Streaks’ composition served as a gateway to further creative development. Adopting a playful approach to the word ‘band,’ YSG imagines the collection as a musical band consisting of hitmakers, headliners and supporting acts. “I love music and a lot of my work is inspired by my musical background,” says Ghoniem. “The relationship between pieces in a collection is vital to the final expression, so naturally I saw each handle as playing in harmony with the others in a band-like setting.” The wordplay also extends to personality traits, where ‘streak’ connotes the defining aspect of an individual. As a result, the collection’s striped, tilted timber design is called the Kooky Streaker.
