Tucked between 550 Bourke Street and 181 William Street, The Meeting Place by BVN for GPT Space&Co is a purpose-designed venue for meetings, workshops and events.More than a functional workspace, it has been conceived as an environment that is uplifting and inspires fresh thinking and a sense of calm. “We approached it with the belief that transformative interior design can shape emotional experiences: lifting energy, inspiring joy and offering a sense of respite,” says Sally Campbell, principal at BVN.
Designed by BVN – a global collective of architects, designers, strategists and researchers – the multi-level venue completes the commercial precinct’s broader work ecosystem. Spanning two mezzanine floors and responding to a height variance between buildings, the design turns constraint into opportunity. A continuous datum line unifies the space, with each level offering a gradient of experiences. From a floating boardroom overlooking the stairs to The Beacon event space at the entry, the layout accommodates everything from small meetings to large-scale events.Flexibility is achieved not by reconfiguring furniture but through a diverse range of settings and amenities. “This variety supports all types of meetings, events and work styles, empowering users to choose the environment that best suits their needs,” says Campbell.
Materiality is expressive, intentional and resourceful. A crazy-paved floor made from salvaged offcut stone links the buildings. “We wanted to show that reusing materials or parts considered waste can still deliver a refined, high-end design outcome,” explains Campbell. Rather than selecting individual stones, the team worked from a broader design intent, allowing the material selection to emerge responsively from what was available.Tactile contrasts are layered throughout – from warm river clay walls and blue-grey timber joinery to a mirror-clad lift shaft that reflects both the city and the user. Above, a dramatic waffle ceiling in The Beacon captures attention from the street, punctuating the otherwise restrained palette. “These materials are deliberately chosen to spark tension … that adds energy to the space,” adds Campbell.
The project was conceived to be deliberately distinct from the everyday and designed to energise its users. Operating within a commercial model where build cost directly impacted viability, the team focused on proportion, detailing and restraint. Painted plasterboard ceilings, standard carpet tiles and laminate joinery are refined through bullnose edges, layered finishes and contrasting textures.A partnership built on mutual trust and shared insight, The Meeting Place marks BVN’s twelfth design collaboration with GPT Space&Co in 13 years. “Over time, we’ve been able to precisely calibrate the proportion, size and allocation of different space types to support GPT Space&Co’s most viable business model,” says Campbell. “Each new project builds on the insights of the last. This continuity has allowed us to push the design further with each iteration.”
