A waterfront residence on the shores of Lake Ontario might not seem to have much in common with Middle Eastern design and heritage. Yet this Canadian home is steeped in influences from Palestine, which is where the family of four that lives here is originally from. Its striking contemporary aesthetic was a collaboration between architectural designer Nathan Buhler of BLDG Workshop, Toronto-based interior designer Dragana Maznic, and custom builder Easton Homes – plus extensive input from the homeowners, who are passionate about design.

The home pushes the boundaries of materiality and craft. “The client sought to merge sophisticated modernity with the warmth and material richness of the Middle East, a cultural lineage to which she and her husband felt deeply connected,” explains Maznic. Early visual inspirations, adds Buhler, included rough-hewn, ruined stone structures from the region, rich in history and texture. “Our goal was to create something new and modern that still carried that same weight, presence, and thoughtfulness,” he says.

Consequently, the home’s façade is as layered and textural as any interior. On one side, an expansive, curved window contrasts with the raw texture of Yakisugi wood, charred to a deep maroon colour using an ancient Japanese technique (it’s also known as Shou Sugi Ban). Corten-steel details are similarly rich in tone and fashioned into rounded forms, while a feature wall of massive raw limestone blocks anchors the composition. “The curves in the design draw directly from the stone ruins that inspired the clients – forms softened over centuries,” says Buhler. “The interplay of rustic and refined, slick and elemental, local and Middle Eastern, establishes the emotional vocabulary that carries through the home,” adds Maznic.

The interior spaces have their own sculptural language, with an openness indirectly inspired by Middle Eastern vaulted ceilings. Custom patterned flooring – such as the Sahara Noir marble inlaid into the oak boards in the entrance hall – draws on the client’s memories of her ancestral home, while the generous open-plan living space offers an immersive lounging experience. “Living Divani’s Extrasoft sofa by Piero Lissoni, upholstered in warm natural leather, was chosen for its ability to radiate in multiple directions, embracing views of the fireplace, kitchen and lake,” says Maznic, who selected other pieces notable for their shapely forms and rich colours, including Cassina’s abstract-patterned rugs and rust-red Utrecht armchairs, a one-of-a-kind wrapped timber bench, and a cascading Elementi pendant by De Padova that frames the monumental fireplace.
