Madison Bell of interior design practice Desa Bell believes our homes should feel like extensions of ourselves – an ethos on full display in her own warm, layered home, Desa Bell Residence on the Gold Coast. When it came to designing her own home, Desa Bell founder Madison Bell approached it with the same philosophy she brings to all her work: creating residences that feel layered, welcoming and deeply personal. “Desa Bell isn’t just a name – it’s the story, the philosophy and the care I bring to every space,” she says. This is on full display in Desa Bell Residence on the Gold Coast, with the project capturing Bell’s love of natural materials, rich texture and the emotional undercurrents that come from crafting houses based on story-telling.
The word desa means village in Indonesian, and reflects Bell’s deep connection to Indonesia. “A collection of my travels throughout Asia, Central America and the Mediterranean are woven into the foundation of Desa Bell,” she says. “And, to me, Indonesia is not just a place but a feeling. It embodies the warmth, texture and the joy of gathering with the people we love and the moments that shaped the earliest chapters of the story my husband and I share.”On the couples’ overseas wedding trip, they discovered a colourful artwork by French artist Saint Lamont. That piece now has pride of place in the home’s open-plan living and dining area, its lively oranges, soft pinks and sun-soaked vibrancy inspiring the palette of the entire abode. “The brief I gave myself was simple: create a home that feels like a holiday,” she says, and that intention can be felt in every room.
Touches of relaxed luxury in Desa Bell Residence echo the atmosphere of a refined overseas villa. There’s a low-lit, spa-like powder room in deep burgundy, matchstick blinds that create beautifully diffused light, a layout that encourages a breezy indoor-outdoor flow and joyful colours which appear throughout – peach-toned walls, a sunshine-yellow ensuite and bright orange joinery in the laundry. Lighting choices from the likes of Flos, Caribou and Tigmi add to this ambience, too, including a glowing paper pendant in a bedroom and a vintage-inspired chandelier above the dining table.Materiality was central to making the home feel alive and lived-in, and Bell leant towards a warm, hand-crafted aesthetic. “Natural timber, stone and hand-applied finishes bring a quiet honesty. Scent, in particular, became a signature layer,” she says. Throughout the home, lime plaster walls meet rich timber flooring, linen drapery and textured tiling. Objects and furnishings are a mix of bespoke and vintage, creating a layered collection that feels meaningful and timeless. “I think both the materiality and the furniture curation reflect my desire to create interiors that are functional and poetic – where craftsmanship, light and sculptural forms elevate the every day.”
Material sourcing in collaboration with Fleur Studios, led by Bell’s longtime friend Wesley Sinclair, brought an added layer of expertise to the project. “We were so fortunate that Wesley’s knowledge and expertise were available to us because of our friendship. He assisted us in procuring our curated selection of marbles and onyx, enabling us to achieve the calibre of luxury materials we envisioned for our home.” Fleur Studios’ artisanal furniture pieces also feature throughout. The oak Elio dining chair, whimsical Cleo stool, Beau bench seat and side tables, and the sculptural Phoebe vase in Rosa Levanto and Calacatta Viola marble each add moments of warmth and character.Because entertaining is a big part of Bell and her partner’s lifestyle, the kitchen naturally became the heart of the home. It’s refined yet practical, with walnut joinery, brass pulls, earthy tiling and soft, blush-hued marble benchtops. An integrated Fisher & Paykel fridge and dishwasher “allows the joinery to remain the hero”, while the PITT Cooking cooktop – with burners set directly into the stone – “introduced a sculptural element we loved”.
Through refined materials, layered textures and a carefully curated selection of furniture, Bell has created a home that feels calm, joyful and deeply personal. She notes that for her, design is more than aesthetics: it’s about memory, collaboration and the simple pleasure of creating a space that welcomes people in. Desa Bell Residence is all that, and more.
