Set in a leafy pocket off the urban streets of South Yarra in Melbourne, Half Courtyard House is an ambient juxtaposition between crisp white tonality and deep bronze.Stepping into Half Courtyard House, it is clear architects and designers Telha Clarke have embraced linear simplicity. Illuminated by a Viabizzuno David Chipperfield Silère light, which “was art for the front facade,” notes associate Amy Byrne from Telha Clarke, the front of the home acts as a portal to what lies beyond.

Upon entry, the interplay of light and dark unifies the home. The kitchen plays with notions of monolithic elegance and minimalism. G–LUX Vanilla Silver natural stone encases the central island bench and splashback; not vying for your attention, the subtle veining and depth within the natural stone is complemented by stainless-steel joinery and appliances. White cabinetry uplifts the sides of the kitchen, seamlessly extending into the living area. The darker elements of steel, including brushed-steel tapware and a locally made custom kitchen pendant by Giffin Design, beautifully contrast the cloudy white tones.Sharp linear symmetry thematically imposes itself on the form and functionality of Half Courtyard House. The living room acts as an anchor of the interior design with a statement fireplace in a dark, enchanting bronze. This bronze fireplace, by Ox Finishes metalwork, draws the eye with its enigmatic movement and minimal linear silhouette. The living room is a harmony of lightness and darkness, with the clean palette allowing the fireplace to affirm precedence.

The study joinery is encased in Elton Group timber veneer with inset ribbed glass doors and dark frames. Set against whitewashed walls and light golden timber, the study’s rich chocolate veneer and white natural stone carry on the language of juxtaposing portals throughout the home’s interior. Mimicking this creative stride, the bar’s form resembles the study. With a bench framed by luminous white cabinetry on either side, the bar speaks to the lofty, conversational nature of the home. Luxury is subtly conveyed through built-in details and thoughtful moments – such as natural stone basins, balustrades, floor-to-ceiling robes, skylights and joinery nooks – and speak to an overarching narrative of functional elegance.Lofty and bright yet dutifully restrained, Half Courtyard House is an example of refined inner-city living. Balancing bronze and timber with creamy whites, and softness with robust textures, Telha Clarke has created a detail-oriented contemporary home.
