Designed by Studio Inès Deschodt, SPICED is a coffee shop located just steps from La Madeleine in Paris’s 9th arrondissement.
Conceived around specialty coffee and spices, the project approaches interior architecture as an immersive, sensory experience rooted in taste, tactility, and daily ritual.
From the outset, the compact footprint informed a focused and deliberate approach. The interior is shaped as an intimate, welcoming environment where hospitality and the act of coffee-making take centre stage. The renovation prioritised clarity of movement and visual continuity, establishing a seamless journey from the entrance through to the tasting area while maintaining a sense of enclosure and calm.
Material choices play a defining role in expressing the identity of the space. Drawing directly from the world of spices, the palette favours textured surfaces, matte finishes, and dense, tactile materials that evoke raw, ground, and moulded ingredients. These elements introduce depth and physical presence, encouraging close interaction and sensory engagement. Lighting is used with restraint, accentuating textures and tonal variations rather than dominating the atmosphere.
