Hawthorn House

As a family residence shared with two adult children, this original Victorian villa with extensive architectural extensions has entered a new genre of intergenerational living. Our role involved a full interior renovation, quietening the home’s grandiose Italianate embellishments and introducing quieter notions of luxury through a thoughtful selection of finishes and furniture. Spaces now invite both private moments and gathering in equal measure.

Hand-crafted elements instantly settle it – from exquisitely carved timber surfaces including hand-pitted solid timber doors, to foundations of raw-edged stone laid indoors and out.

Enriching garden connections and filtering sunlight within, lithe pistachio green steel French doors replace heavy timber iterations across the length of the generous living area. They open onto a shaded loggia newly furnished with lounge settings that surround the re-paved pool.

Key to our transformation was creating more intimate moments amongst the home’s grand proportions. We replaced an ornate wrought-iron stair balustrade with slim bronze bands capped with a handrail entwined in olive green leather. Enhanced by our expanded skylight, it now gently floats.

The stairs originally landed within a cavernous formal sitting room, so we softened it with a subtle concave wall. Pierced by two arches with blocks of sandstone tracing their contours, one opens to an intimate meditation chamber that leads to wellness spaces.

The primary retreat presented a particularly compelling opportunity to explore scale with restraint. It balances lavish green stone with refined detailing, enhancing a sensual yet directional sophistication that hums throughout the home.

Indoors, gilded metals shimmer throughout – from aged brass skirting and mirror trims to sculptural joinery pulls on custom pieces. Upstairs, an airy lightness refreshes the bedrooms plus separate studies for the couple, while stone selections in the bathrooms and children’s entertaining lounge highlight our finely crafted designs.
