High in the hills of Trousdale, Beverly Hills, lies a unique and characterful home. The mid-century, single-storey building is infused with architectural integrity, and has been newly restored by its current owners to reflect both its own history and their aesthetic sensibilities. The house is the home of Iranian designer Arya Martin and his partner, Michael, co-founders of design studio OSKLO, and from the moment they first saw it, they knew it was meant to be.“We were both immediately obsessed,” says Michael. “It was one of the rarest and most remarkable mid-century homes we had seen in our work or travels. Arya and I immediately knew we wanted to restore it, maintaining the architectural heritage but infusing it with a modern design edge to transform all interior and exterior spaces.”

Designed in the 1960s by the notable mid-century architects Benton & Parks, the Beverly Hills house was built by George Varnum, one of the most in-demand builders of his day, with a post-and-beam structure, a flat roof, and large glazed doors at the rear. It takes the shape of two inverted U’s, one curving around a Japanese-style atrium, the other a pool and lawn area. It had only been renovated once since it was built and retained much of its original character and features, so rather than remodel it, the couple chose to restore it with a light touch.

“An assortment of darker earth and pastel colours were popular in the day when the house was created,” says Arya. “We brought in a lighter oak for the wood floor, to blend more into the saw-cut concrete we had preserved. We tried to integrate that with our usual palette of creamier white and earthy tones, branching out a bit with a more organic limestone for the main fireplaces.”

As designers, they will often specify custom-made pieces for their projects in order to achieve their precise vision for each space, which they mix with carefully sourced vintage and antique furniture. As their practice evolved, the homes they designed would comprise as many as 90 per cent custom-made pieces, which led to numerous enquiries from people who wanted to buy the pieces.

As a result, it was a natural continuation for them to create their own furniture line, named Studio OSKLO. The Trousdale collection – their third for the brand – is named after the area in which the house is located, and inspired by its striking setting: the views of mountains, cityscape and coast; the granite of the surrounding landscape; and the 1960s architecture of the building itself.

“We’re always careful not to let a particular style or architecture define the overall house,” say Michael and Arya. “Instead, we chose to mix different styles of the day.”The bar off the living room, for example, is Hollywood Regency in style, with a glamorous aesthetic befitting of a room that is always party-ready. In the dining room, the striking chandelier over the table brings in a touch of midcentury Italian modern, while the joinery of the vanity in the main bedroom is reminiscent of the 1960s style of the British designer David Hicks.Among these influences are scattered art and design pieces by a host of well-known names, including Julian Schnabel, Ed Ruscha, Jean Royère, Jacques Adnet and Rick Owens.
