The inspiration behind Il Grande is rooted in the golden years of Palm Beach, once the epicentre of Riviera nightlife. Toro was captivated by the building’s festive past — a place that, since 1928, had hosted sultry soirées and decadent celebrations — and imagined Il Grande as a venue that awakens at night, a modern ode to candlelight, desire, and drama.

From the outset, he envisioned a space that would feel cinematic — infused with passion and shadow, set in a palette of blood-reds and burnished golds. Throughout the design, a recurring motif of poisoned fl owers emerges — a romantic yet tragic symbol drawn from the intensity of Romeo and Juliet. This idea became a thread that runs through the interiors, evoking the romance and mystery of another era. “I wanted to pay tribute to the golden age of Cannes — to its sultry cinema and passionate parties,” Toro notes. “Lighting was essential — it needed to feel like candlelight. Not overly polished. Intimate. Charged with emotion.”

But Il Grande is not merely a restaurant. It is, in Toro’s words, a “Gesamtkunstwerk” — a total work of art, where every detail contributes to a unifi ed narrative. This wasn’t about decoration; it was about immersion. “Architecture, light, furniture, music, scent — all of these elements needed to be part of the same composition,” he says. “Nothing could be left to chance.”

Working within the original rotunda of Palm Beach — a near 10-meter-high volume — Toro played with scale and layering to orchestrate intimacy within grandeur. Rich, retro jacquard fabrics, polished lacquer furniture, and cathedral-like concrete columns form a visual dialogue between strength and sensuality. A warm palette of reds, brass, and marble nods to the opulence of Cannes’ Palme d’Or, while hand-blown Murano chandeliers bathe the space in a soft, theatrical glow. Every surface is intentional, every piece custom was designed in France in collaboration with master artisans. This meticulous attention to craft is, for Toro, non-negotiable. The hand is visible in every detail, from sculptural woodwork and bespoke lighting to the fi nely woven textiles that wrap the banquettes.
