The owner of this 1975 mid-century home in Laguna Beach was on the verge of signing a lease across the street when a tiny voice said not to. That same night, she went online and saw this residence listed as “coming soon”. Despite 50 people touring the open house and multiple offers within days, the home ultimately chose her.Designer Julie Van Daele of Well Received wanted to create a grounding haven for the owner, preserving the original character of the home’s mid-century bones while creating an atmosphere that speaks to contemporary design. The renovation of the main suite and guest bathroom, alongside a carefully curated furnishing scheme, transforms the space into one that pays homage to both heritage and modern living.

The living room sets the tone with an Ombia Studio ceramic coffee table anchoring the space. An Ellison Studios Float sofa and Estudio Persona Nido chairs provide seating, while an Armadillo Corsica rug in Agave grounds the palette. The original fireplace and tiles remain untouched. The room anchors the thematic principle of creating a sense of grounding for its guests. In the dining room, a custom green lacquer table made in Los Angeles sits beneath the home’s original light fixture. Vintage chairs from Claude Home surround it, while a Giancarlo Valle x Nordic Knots rug adds texture underfoot. This careful layering of sculptural furniture, organic textures and rare vintage finds gives the home its distinctive depth.

The powder room wonderfully showcases Van Daele’s composed approach to design and curation. Apparatus wall lights illuminate glasswork by Bananas & Hammocks. Clé Zellige tiles in Argan Brown and custom plaster create a tactile, almost meditative space. The main bathroom continues this approach with lighting by In Common With, Jadore polished stone and Portola Paints Roman Clay finish.Van Daele’s approach refuses nostalgia for nostalgia’s sake, yet at the same time reveals her careful, considered eye. One can’t help but notice her meticulous attention to how each element converse with the home. Vintage Spanish wall sconces in the primary bedroom, nightstands from Sarah Sherman Samuel’s Gladys collection and artwork from local designers compete to earn their place.
