West Cliff and Oxford Residences | Marmol Radziner
Just steps away from the iconic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, the newly imagined holiday compound, consisting of West Cliff and Oxford Residences, offers its Santa Cruz-local residents the ultimate getaway for their large family.Marmol Radziner was hired to update the original home onsite and create a cohesive, red cedar–clad guesthouse. Linked by an abundant central courtyard, the property is designed to accommodate days filled with surfing, biking, kayaking, swimming and more.
Both residences were inspired by the client’s love of Northern California’s Sea Ranch, with a shared identity that celebrates warm modernism and local character. West Cliff Residence, originally built in the 1960s, underwent an extensive renovation to resolve decades of layered alterations. Inside, Douglas fir cabinetry, panelled walls, original river rock and panoramic ocean views impart a sense of grounded tranquillity.Oxford Residence takes a more playful, youthful approach, with three guest bedrooms for the homeowners’ adult children and an organic material palette that mirrors the tones of sand, wood and sea. Ultimately, the brief was to create spaces that feel as true to the location as possible. “They were locals,” says Ashley Nath, associate and interiors studio director at Marmol Radziner. “They wanted it to feel like it’s in Santa Cruz – not plopped in place.”
Throughout both homes, the spirit of California design comes alive through custom commissions, handcrafted pieces and accessories sourced from local makers and thrift shops. Much of the art is by Santa Cruz artists including Jim Phillips, Jody Alexander and Jim Winters, while stand-out pieces such as an Ido Yoshimoto walnut coffee table and a custom Douglas fir cabinet by Minjae Kim in West Cliff Residence add texture. The palette is pulled directly from the coastal landscape. The kitchens exemplify the homes’ subtle contrast in tone and shared sensibility. At West Cliff Residence, the design embraces simplicity, anchored by a large island made for entertaining. Across the courtyard, Oxford Residence features an all-walnut island and cabinetry paired with honed Basaltina stone benchtops and a splashback. “From day one, we agreed it had to feel natural,” says Bernardo Terán, associate and project manager at Marmol Radziner. “The materials are true to the coast – honest, tactile and resilient.”
Between the two houses, a lush central courtyard ties them together with Mediterranean and coastal plantings. There’s an olive tree, Japanese maple, deer grass, rosemary, wild rose and more. A cedar soaking tub, fire pit, custom bar and generous seating offer ample room for the family to gather and make memories. Both homes incorporate green roofs that absorb rainfall and temper summer heat, blending sustainability with a sense of softness. Oxford Residence is Marmol Radziner’s first all-electric home, while West Cliff Residence retains elements of its original structure, creating a subtle dialogue between past and present.
For the clients, the project symbolises a homecoming of sorts – a way to root themselves once again in the place they love. Over a three-year period, the design team crafted two residences with an authentic, meaningful feel, layered with treasured pieces.
