Set in Elizabeth Bay, Higher Love represents more than two decades of transformation for interior designer Alexandra Kidd. What began as a modest one-bedroom apartment in 2005 has evolved into a layered, multi-level home shaped by memory, personal growth and the life built within its walls.Originally owned by her partner Ian, the residence became the couple’s first shared address, later their landing place after years abroad, and eventually the foundation for their young family. The latest renovation marks its most ambitious shift, redefining the apartment with the addition of a new floor and an architectural expression that opens the interior to the sky and harbour.

The design is anchored by a sweeping white staircase that arcs through the home like a sculptural ribbon. Its presence unites the darker palette of the original lower level with the luminous pavilion above. Installed through an intricate craning and welding process, the stair’s fluid form is both functional and symbolic – an elegant thread tying together the home’s past and present. Its curvature softens the linear bones, encouraging a gentle sense of movement as one ascends toward the brighter spaces overhead.Retained as an homage to the apartment’s earlier iteration, the lower floor holds its deep, enveloping tones. These spaces carry the emotional depth of years lived, recalled through reflective surfaces, saturated hues and the resonance of familiar materials. They speak to the apartment’s earliest chapter, when Alexandra and Ian first began folding their lives together.

Above, the new level embraces openness. Referencing Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright, architect Matthew Cumming of Mijollo International crafted a glass pavilion that appears to lift toward the horizon. Light washes across warm timbers, expressive stonework and soft textiles, creating an interior that feels calm and immersive despite its urban setting. The master suite is particularly serene – wrapped in sheers, washed with natural light and connected to a pocket of greenery that allows for private outdoor bathing in the heart of Sydney. Thoughtful detailing ensures the pavilion remains peaceful throughout the day, with subtle transitions and carefully curated sightlines shaping how each space is experienced. A balance of sculptural furniture and understated finishes further reinforces the assured mood of the upper level.

Throughout, furnishings, lighting and art have been layered with intention. Rather than feeling curated or static, the home exudes lived-in warmth. Every piece has been chosen for its emotional resonance as much as its form, producing a sense of ease that follows you from room to room. What emerges is a portrait of Alexandra herself. Each decision responds not only to aesthetic aspiration but to emotion – how light moves across a surface, how a room feels at dusk, how the house supports the tempo of a day. Higher Love is refined yet intimately human, capturing the maturation of a designer and the unfolding of a family, revealing a home that has grown in character and confidence alongside its inhabitants.
