In an age that’s ushering in AI, technological change is happening even in unexpected places. One is the medium of selfies: at self.space, a recently opened photography studio in Dubai, the concept of the self-portrait is being reinvented with AI technology, creating a hybrid of studio portraiture and the humble selfie that promises a new kind of personal creativity.

self.space is the brainchild of entrepreneur and creative technologist Peter Bondarenko (whose decade of AI research has embraced everything from cancer diagnostics to cinematic tools) and Mitia Muravev, who transforms bricks-and-mortar environments into luxury consumer-tech experiences. Previously, the duo founded creative agency FancyShot, which has designed campaigns for Nike and Google.

Bondarenko and Muravev envision self.space as a new category of AI-first consumer experience: one where individuals can come to create professional-quality “selfies” – or rather, self-portraits, in comfortable seclusion, without external observation, respecting the privacy norms of Middle Eastern culture. The studio occupies a warehouse in Al Quoz, an area chosen for its central accessibility and its position as a cultural hub, populated by galleries and showrooms.

To design the space, the founders called on architect Polina Nosikova, founder of Moscow- and Dubai-based studio Bleek Bureau. Her challenge was to transform a cavernous warehouse, which she inherited as a raw shell, into an environment that reflects self.space’s ideals of privacy, autonomy and emotional comfort – concepts that were just as important to the venture as AI technology. “Originally, the warehouse had no partitions, no finishes – only bare concrete walls and exposed ceiling trusses,” she remembers. “There was minimal infrastructure and no assumptions for zoning or comfortable human presence, so we had to create a fully functional environment from scratch.”

Bondarenko and Muravev wanted a design that felt reassuring as well as technologically sophisticated, so Nosikova focused on curved walls and furniture, soothing colours and tactile materials, creating a welcoming entrance zone with sculptural elements and double-height volumes. The reception area contrasts with the intimate feel of the private studios, balancing enclosure and openness. “The primary goal was to create a space for self-expression while ensuring that every photoshoot takes place in a completely private environment, free from the pressure often associated with traditional photo studios,” the designer says. “We developed a clean, minimalist language that feels warm rather than clinical, encouraging people to spend time in the studio rather than simply arrive, take photos and leave. It feels like a space for oneself.”
