Multitude of Sins gives us a masterclass in designing a brutalist home for a generation tired of hedonism. After WWII Brutalism found its way into our major cities. Struggling to rebuild the damage post-war, we needed ethic not “aesthetic”. Honesty in materials and raw functionality was the new status quo but its evolved since. The 1970s shunned the design approach as cold and replaced it with paisley's and mustard yellow, 2026, however, has embraced its cool authenticity and blessed it with velvet, mood-lighting and kooky curvaceous details. One example is this unconventional Bangalore home.

The 380-square-metre brutalist home was envisioned by Smita Thomas, the founder of Indian interiors studio Multitude of Sins. Its material language combines charcoal basalt, deep mauve marble, concrete-textured surfaces, leather straps, stainless-steel accents and dichromatic veneers. Crafted as a family home for Thomas, her husband and their dog, the design champions finishes and forms that embody strength and stability; these are complemented by artistic embellishments that are functional and expressive.

The overarching grey palette refrains from over-ornamentation, instead enhancing the natural beauty of the materials. “Grey, often dismissed as a non-colour, is in fact rich and complex,” Thomas explains. “Here we celebrate the depth that grey provides, accentuating it with carefully chosen shades of deep mauve, maroon and hints of blue.

The living room is a masterclass in purposeful design and playful spirit. Just beyond the entrance, a generous open area invites multiple activities, from morning yoga and sun-drenched naps to a spontaneous weekend of socialising. To the right, a fluted wall in charcoal basalt adds a bold, Brutalist edge, topped with mauve-veined Toronto marble that echoes the Bangalore home’s reserved palette. It’s a favourite area for the dog, who lounges and scratches against the textured stone (the naturally dark finish cleverly hides the marks of daily life).

“The design of our home is deeply attuned to the needs of our dog as an essential member of our family,” says Thomas. “Beyond choosing durable materials to withstand scratches and splashes, we’ve created a layout that prioritises his comfort and freedom of movement. The spacious furniture arrangement also ensures he has plenty of room to roam, play and bask in the sunlight as he dozes off.”
