Basking in a revitalised glow that emanates towards its entertaining terrace and enchanting garden beyond, this home in Sydney’s Lower North Shore has been elegantly elevated to enhance the day-to-day activities of a young family.

Reconfiguring the layout was a key priority to accommodate the practicalities of raising four energetic young children. Having lived in the house for several years, our clients also wanted to enhance the quality of light streaming in and reinvigorate neglected rooms with energised colour and texture. Prioritising the flow of sunshine within the living room, we replanned and expanded the kitchen, adding a seam of glass doors that open onto the garden. The hardy kitchen island bench forms the home’s nucleus, adding a robust elegance that accommodates the wear and tear of active home life.

Linking spaces, gentle curves now undulate throughout both levels adding softened sentiments. Most striking are the squashed arch entry points we added. Many support rounded timber and glass doors channelling light amongst internal spaces. Adding refinement, a solid timber balustrade traces a newly sculpted staircase. This once dark corner is energised via sunlight streaming down upon its wheat-hued rendered walls.

Infusing a deep sunburst glow within the sitting and dining rooms adjoining the hallway, we coated the walls in a marigold shade with mustard yellow undertones. Vintage furniture and design classics further channel an air of nostalgia. Sprinkled with contemporary pieces including lighting, the sanctuary subscribes to a ‘last forever’ notion of modern design.

Upstairs, lighter tones prevail, notably within the primary suite where the curved timber frame of a custom bedhead extends to incorporate two vintage Deco bedside tables. Upholstered in a fabric scattered with mushroom pink and terracotta petals, the space quietly embraces a romantic sentiment, as does its adjoining ensuite.
