Revered European brand Castle Stones, known for reimagining old-world stone for modern applications, is now available in Australia and New Zealand, exclusively through South Australian stone specialist Tumbled. For local architects, designers and homeowners, the arrival of this esteemed product signals a new era in flooring and wall finishes – one merging contemporary innovation with the inherent beauty of old stone.

Tumbled’s co-founder, Sarah Wiese – whose Adelaide-based business curates natural stone, porcelain and ceramic products imbued with story, texture and soul – discovered Castle Stones via a social media post. “At first I thought it was aged natural stone,” she recalls. “It immediately captured my attention.”Beautifully made and architecturally minded, Castle Stones’ bricks and stones are handmade reproductions of original antique marble and limestone tiles from historic Flemish, French and Italian villas, castles, monasteries and churches. Their high-performance composition is matched by a lightweight six-to-eight-millimetre thickness.  “The stones are cast, pressed and then given their historic appearance through a unique post-processing technique,” explains company founder Maurits Simonette. “Because each tile is made and coloured by hand, every floor is completely unique.”

The inspiration behind Castle Stones is deeply personal. Growing up among the granite cliffs and fairytale-like castles of Portugal, Simonette’s love of painting, and modelling and making moulds, was encouraged by his mother and grandmother. “I started with sculpture and interior design, but the magic of ancient stone kept calling me back,” he says. “Eventually, I began blending cement, marble powder and pigments to create new forms with old souls.”That vision led to a range of reproduction stone that feel as if they’ve been walked on for centuries – yet they’re only millimetres thick and highly durable, ideal for underfloor heating, spa zones and contemporary construction. Available in 10 permutations – including French Bricks, Big Bricks and Cobble Stones – and 11 colourways, Castle Stones’ products are equally suitable for modern or heritage projects.

When Wiese discovered that the range wasn’t available in Australia and New Zealand, she pursued Simonette for two years before eventually meeting him in Vietnam to finalise the partnership. “We knew we were both similar souls with the same work ethic, passion and love for textures and materials,” she says. “We wanted to be in business together.”As the exclusive agent for Castle Stones in the Asia-Pacific region, Tumbled now has a new offering that is a historically rich and brilliantly forward-thinking product – ancient stone in a contemporary form, carrying a timeless power.
