For more than 60 years, Elton Group has partnered with ALPI to deliver veneer solutions that marry innovation, sustainability and design integrity. This long-standing partnership has not only shaped Elton Group’s material offering but has also fostered creative collaborations with some of Australia’s most visionary designers and makers.Elton Group is a trusted supplier of authentic, innovative and responsible timber-based surfaces. The Melbourne-based company’s respect for timber as a renewable resource guides every aspect of its process, from sourcing FSC-certified timber to maintaining 324 hectares of forest in Victoria’s Otway Ranges.

Driving this partnership forward is ALPllignum, ALPI’s signature range of recomposed timber veneers. This collection is developed through a method designed to maximise yield and minimise waste. It begins with rotary peeling timber from responsibly managed forests, which is then dyed using natural textile pigments, recomposed into square logs and sliced to reveal intricate, repeatable patterns. By recomposing these thin veneer sheets into a new, perfectly square log, ALPI transforms raw timber into a designer’s palette, unlocking both complex designs and surface textures.

The ALPI Designer collection showcases the creative potential of this material. Under the guidance of Italian creative director Piero Lissoni, the range features collaborations with global luminaries such as Ettore Sottsass, Estúdio Campana, Nendo, Kengo Kuma, Patricia Urquiola and GamFratesi. Veneers – like Xilos, Warp, String and Maritime Pine – underpin ALPI’s vision that timber can be both timeless and avant-garde.

Locally, Elton Group brings this philosophy to life through creative collaborations. Bethan Laura Wood designed a bespoke bookcase veneer for the National Gallery of Victoria using unique ALPI materials. Designers such as Dustin Frische of Softer Studio, Beci Orpin and Karin Bochnik explore the expressive potential of the ALPI range in objects and joinery, showcased during Melbourne Design Week. Broached Commissions’ ‘Recall’ exhibition combined vintage timber veneer with ALPI veneers to create a robust dialogue between past and present. Meanwhile, Ed Linacre, Brahman Perera, Simone Haag and Alexandra Kidd have also used Elton Group materials to make furniture and lighting that reveal timber’s emotional and tactile appeal.

Bold, precise and texturally rich, these surfaces invite designers to think beyond traditional woodgrain.
Showcasing the strength of this partnership is the Eveneer Raw ALPllignum range, an Australian-exclusive series of curated veneers by Elton Group. Bold, precise and texturally rich, these surfaces invite designers to think beyond traditional woodgrain. Their uniformity and customisable nature make them ideal for architectural interiors, objects and furniture that are enduring and expressive.

As a bridge between international innovation and local craftsmanship, Elton Group continues to foster projects that champion materiality and sustainability. The company’s work with ALPI and local designers celebrates creative thinking, responsible making and timber’s enduring place in contemporary design.
