Balmain House | GOLDEN | 2026 | 澳大利亚
In the inner-city Melbourne suburb of Cremorne, Balmain House presents as an exercise in balance, where architecture and furnishing operate in considered alignment. A new build, with architecture by Auhaus and interior design by GOLDEN, the residence establishes a calm spatial rhythm through measured volumes, soft light and a finely tuned material palette – an environment that called for an equally disciplined interior response.
Zenn Design joined the process in the final stages of construction, tasked with shaping the home’s upholstered elements – which included custom seating, dining chairs, kitchen stools and bespoke furnishings – window treatments and styling within a condensed timeframe. Working with a client based overseas, the studio navigated distance through an intensely collaborative digital dialogue, translating architectural cues into tactile form while maintaining continuity across time zones.Site visits informed early decisions, allowing the team to read scale, orientation and tonal nuance firsthand. From there, discussions unfolded through detailed virtual consultations, supported by rounds of material sampling sent internationally to test texture, weight and colour in situ. This iterative exchange ensured selections responded to context rather than existing as standalone gestures.
Custom pieces were developed and produced by Zenn Design in Melbourne, reflecting the studio’s focus on bespoke design and considered interiors specifically tailored to each client. Seating – including the Elba dining chair and Archie stool – bespoke upholstered beds and bedheads and window furnishings were conceived as extensions of the architecture’s language, prioritising proportion, clarity of line and material integrity.Zenn Design’s approach reflects a broader philosophy grounded in Australian manufacturing and long-term durability, as well as its commitment to Australian craftsmanship. By creating everything inhouse at its Melbourne workshop, the studio maintains both quality control and a tangible connection between concept and fabrication.
Minimalism here is not an exercise in reduction, but in refinement. Clean silhouettes and resolved geometries allow natural light, architectural detailing and layered textiles to carry atmosphere. Upholstery introduces softness without distraction – embodied in pieces like Zenn’s Willow fully upholstered bed and Soho bedhead. Window furnishings, meanwhile, temper brightness to create moments of pause throughout the day.Delivering a project remotely was a seamless process, with Zenn Design coordinating production and overseeing installation. A dedicated project manager provided on-the-ground continuity, ensuring that every component, from fabrication through to final placement, aligned with the original vision.
Completed within six weeks, the result feels neither hurried nor overworked. Instead, Balmain House reads as cohesive and assured, defined by a sense of equilibrium between built form and inhabitation. Furniture, textiles and architectural expression operate as a single composition – one that privileges longevity, material honesty and liveability over statement. In this way, the residence demonstrates how careful coordination, local craftsmanship and measured design thinking can produce interiors that feel both elevated and deeply settled, attuned to everyday life while retaining a quiet sense of permanence.
