This Federation Arts and Crafts-style residence located within a harbourside pocket of Mosman basks in a sunlit glow thanks to its significant rear extension across three levels. It now balances the modern conveniences of open plan living with the addition of a sizeable kitchen and informal lounge, plus a new parent’s retreat. Working with TKD Architects who designed the home’s extension, we advised on layout details, determined all surface finishes and joinery elements (most significantly within the new kitchen and bathrooms), before layering new furnishings.

We enhanced the residence’s early 1900s heritage features via generous applications of crafted stone. Adding depth to its soaring proportions (both old and new), we used gentle tones to convey a sense of lightness. All new bathroom joinery floats above stone floors to enhance the home’s solid foundation. In the rear living area, timeless mid-century furniture designs (including vintage finds) mingle with contemporary pieces.

Key to our approach was adding a softness to the home’s angular framework and referencing the existing interior arched entrances to link new additions. This resulted in the introduction of sweeping curves. Most significant is the kitchen island with convex base supports crafted from Pink and Rose White Tiberio marble to soften its stature. Another key feature is the dining terrace’s checkered stone floor set with a curved radius. It conveys a semi-outdoor ambience, heightened by the sliding glass wall facing the garden from its elevated outlook, and timber batten ceiling.

Directly above in the parent’s retreat, we constructed a wide arch in the ensuite, framing notions of relaxation given a freestanding oval-shaped bath resides beyond it overlooking the garden. In the bedroom, we nestled the bed and custom burl and stone floating consoles within the timber returns of an arched wall.
