Rooted in Tradition, Refined by Innovation — A Culinary Sanctuary in the Heart of Singapore Come on a journey to delight your senses.
Nestled quietly behind a row of conserved Peranakan shophouses, Thevar reveals itself with understated elegance in the heart of Singapore. The preserved façade and brushed granite threshold honour the site’s heritage while offering a subtle transition into a contemporary narrative. This project reinterprets cultural memory through a refined spatial experience rooted in both history and craft.
The arrival begins at a quiet gateway, reminiscent of a gopura, where minimal gestures set a contemplative tone. Spatial compression and alignment subtly direct movement, allowing guests to transition from the exterior bustle into an introspective interior world. Each passage is intentional, framing views and guiding perception.
At its core, the design draws inspiration from traditional Indian architectural sequences, translating them into a modern dining journey. Guests are guided through a series of thresholds—each moment carefully composed to evoke anticipation and discovery. The experience unfolds not as a single space, but as a curated procession of layered environments.
Deep saffron leather banquette seating introduces a bold yet controlled contrast, infusing contemporary energy into the space. Custom furniture elements reinterpret Chettinad craftsmanship, with lathed wood, stone handles, and sculptural forms integrated seamlessly. Each detail is designed to carry both function and cultural resonance.
At the heart of the restaurant lies the central dining hall—an inner courtyard illuminated by a soft artificial skylight. This space echoes the sanctum of a traditional Indian home, where light becomes both a spatial and emotional anchor. Here, architecture and dining converge into a singular, immersive experience.
Materiality plays a pivotal role in shaping the narrative, with hand-applied lime plaster walls evoking the raw tactility of ancient stone. Bronze accents and artisanal lighting introduce warmth, while maintaining a quiet sense of refinement. The palette remains grounded—earthy, muted, and intentional.
On the upper level, a concealed journey leads to Chef Mano’s private dining sanctuary. Guests ascend through a softly illuminated passage, culminating in an intimate ten-seat room layered with art, texture, and quiet luxury. This hidden space offers a more personal dialogue between cuisine, heritage, and design.
Thevar is ultimately conceived as a culinary sanctuary—where tradition is not preserved as nostalgia, but reimagined through contemporary expression. The interplay of architecture, material, and light reflects the philosophy of the cuisine itself. It is a space designed to engage the senses, invite reflection, and leave a lasting impression.
