Surgeon's Haven | Tali Roth | 2025 | 澳大利亚

Set within a classic Victorian terrace in Melbourne’s Armadale, Surgeon’s House unfolds as a layered and expressive reimagining of a once-resolved dwelling—where heritage detail meets a distinctly contemporary, character-driven interior. What began as a contained intervention evolved into a full refurbishment, guided by a growing dialogue between client and designer and a shared appetite for individuality.

Retaining the home’s original bones—ornate plasterwork, timber skirtings and a traditional cellular plan—the design introduces a series of immersive, colour-saturated rooms that articulate distinct moods and functions. A buttery yellow sitting room and a peppermint-toned retreat sit in quiet contrast, each softened by tactile upholstery, vintage pieces and playful detailing. Throughout, unexpected juxtapositions—antique textiles with sculptural contemporary lighting, expressive artworks with refined architectural elements—create a sense of rhythm and intrigue.

In the reworked living and kitchen areas, existing joinery is reimagined rather than replaced, finished in either dappled timber with a softly glossed surface or ecru-painted cabinetry, and paired with bespoke hardware from the forthcoming STR x Lo & Co collection. Above, sculptural pendants and curated objects lend a sense of lightness and personality, while a modular arrangement defines the spatial flow.

A celebration of local design talent is woven throughout, grounding the project in its Australian context. Ultimately, Surgeon’s House balances restraint with whimsy—a home that feels both composed and spirited, where heritage is not preserved in stasis but gently reinterpreted for modern life.
