Εlounda Hills
The Hilltop Branded Apartments at Elounda Hills represent Block722’s contemporary interpretation of hospitality deeply rooted in the Cretan landscape. Conceived as an extension of the terrain itself, the project emerges organically from the steep hillside, allowing architecture and nature to coexist as a unified spatial experience. The natural contours of the land informed every aspect of the composition — from the cascading arrangement of the residences to the orientation of each volume toward uninterrupted panoramic views of Elounda and Agios Nikolaos.

At the heart of the design lies a balance between openness and intimacy. Expansive openings, generous terraces and seamless indoor–outdoor living dissolve the boundaries between interior space and the Mediterranean landscape, while the careful staggering of volumes, layered planting and subtle geometric offsets preserve privacy and a sense of retreat. The architecture embraces natural light, sea breeze and horizon views as essential components of everyday living.

Inspired by the biophilic philosophy of 1 Hotels, Block722 translated the brand’s wellness-driven principles through a distinctly Cretan architectural language. Planted sculptural roofs — conceived as elevated extensions of the hillside — became the project’s defining gesture, reconnecting the buildings back to the landscape while supporting biodiversity through endemic Mediterranean vegetation and herbs. These living surfaces reinforce the project’s environmental responsiveness while softening the visual presence of the development within the hilltop setting.

Materiality plays a central role in shaping the project’s atmosphere. Locally sourced stone, timber, terrazzo, limewashed textures and handcrafted details create a tactile and emotionally resonant environment that reflects the authenticity of Cretan craftsmanship and vernacular architecture. The spatial language draws inspiration from traditional communal typologies, reinterpreted through a contemporary lens focused on wellbeing, slowness and sensory experience.

Passive environmental strategies — including natural cross-ventilation, optimized solar orientation, planted roofs and architectural shading — are embedded throughout the design process, reducing environmental impact while enhancing climatic comfort. Rather than imposing itself on the site, the project seeks to belong to it:an architecture of permanence, shaped by landscape, culture and the timeless qualities of Mediterranean living.
