Sorella is a boutique gelateria located alongside Piccolo, its sister bar and restaurant, just metres from the sea at St Clair Beach in Ōtepoti Dunedin.
Conceived as a beacon within the precinct, Sorella is vibrant, welcoming, and deeply local - a place where schoolchildren spill in after class and gelato purists find something exceptional. Chef Marco, a gelatiere with 14 years of Italian experience, crafts each batch fresh on site, by hand.

The design is shaped by deliberate restraint. Steering clear of pastel palettes and nostalgic tropes, we looked instead to traditional Italian gelaterias, reinterpreting them through a rich palette of deep burgundy and burnt peach. The result is a simple yet layered interior that feels both unexpected and memorable.
A central viewing window anchors the space, connecting guests directly to Marco and his process. Burgundy cabinetry grounds the counter, set against lavanto rossa marble and robust vinyl in careful tension. Handcrafted floor tiles trace playful geometries, while toffee-swirled pendant lights offer a subtle homage to the product itself. Gelato takes centre stage - rich, colourful, and presented as art.
