The renovation by Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer of this California home is a layered step away from Silicon Valley tech-minimalism, leaning into rich velvet, moody plaster and host-ready warmth.
With its rolling hills and endless expanses of green, Los Altos Hills in California is the picture of small-town charm. But it has another side. It’s located in Silicon Valley, and many a tech mogul has called it home: among them are Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, and Apple’s Steve Jobs, who grew up in the area.
The couple that owns this modern, stone- and timber-clad home also works in the tech industry, but there’s nothing machine-like or clinical about the residence; rather, it leans into organic, natural materials and colours, offering a calming respite from the digital realm. They share the house with their three children and dog, and have a love of entertaining, which is reflected in the home’s open layout and its spectacular A-frame kitchen and dining space.
The home was extensively renovated by Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer, co-founders of Sonoma studio Hommeboys Interiors. The duo upgraded much of the four-bedroom building, focusing on the indoor-outdoor lifestyle the family leads. “They love having friends over, hosting parties and cooking for groups large and small,” says Carrier. “The home needed to have a great flow to it, to be comfortable and relaxed enough for their day-to-day lives, but also elevated enough for the types of events they like to host.”
The house’s façade, fusing organic stone with contemporary glass, is echoed by Hommeboys’ nuanced interior design, which harnesses natural stones and timbers, earthy woodland tones, and hand-crafted touches such as tiles, limewash paints and custom-made textured plaster. Refinement comes in the form of swathes of veined marble (Calacatta Monet in the kitchen and Arabescato Vagli in the principal bathroom), white oak ceilings, and rich velvet upholstery. “The home’s vernacular is modern, but we didn’t want it to feel cold,” says Mutter-Rottmayer. “In order to imbue it with warmth, authenticity and timelessness, we leaned into using organic materials in innovative ways. That really adds a level of peacefulness and supports the connection between outdoors and inside.”
While the principal bedroom suite features a similar neutral palette to the living room, with a custom plaster fireplace and taupe velvet armchairs by Lawson-Fenning, the bedrooms belonging to the family’s children have a very different feel, with patterned wool blankets by Toast and inky blue-green walls. “We leaned into deep earth and jewel tones for these rooms and the office,” says Mutter-Rottmayer. “The emphasis was on balancing the light spaces with others that feel cocooning and moodier.”
The main living space, meanwhile, is a masterclass in open-plan design. “The highlight for us is the sculptural plaster fireplace, which started as a sketch of ours and came to life in the most beautiful way as the centrepiece of the room,” says Carrier. “This space is grounded in creamy plaster and natural stone, which lets some of the bolder furniture and art pieces really pop. Another standout is the curved Pouffe sofa by Stahl+Band, which we covered in Dedar’s Plushy brown velvet. It speaks to the fireplace and really sets up the room for conversation and hosting.”
