Set within a wooded landscape in East Hampton, the home of fashion designer Natalie De Banco sits quietly among the trees. Reworked by Helena Clunies-Ross, it is no longer simply a place for everyday living, but somewhere to gently step back from the pace of things and return to oneself. Healing: A Way of Life “一个以宁静为基调的私人疗愈居所。” “A private wellness retreat rooted in calm.” This was Natalie’s clearest intention from the outset. As the founder of Bronx and Banco, she operates within a rhythm of constant visibility and momentum. For her, home is not only about comfort or beauty, but a place that can hold physical and emotional depletion—a place to slow down, regain a sense of order, and return to balance.

The house Natalie was drawn to was not particularly striking. It carried traces of time and was far from a notable piece of architecture. Yet it held a quiet pull—because of a tree. She recalls, “It was my birthday, and when I saw the pink cherry blossom in front of the house in full bloom, I knew—this was it.”

An approximately 3,500-square-foot expansion introduces large areas of glazing, natural materials, and layered textures that gently open the house to its surroundings, allowing a quieter, more enveloped way of living to take shape. For Natalie, such a space softens the tension of everyday life.A refurbished outdoor pool, together with a custom Buddha sculpture with a subtle Southeast Asian sensibility, adds a soft, distant note to the overall calm—bringing traces of her time and creative life in Bali quietly back into the everyday.

In the central space, the upper cabinets were removed, allowing the surfaces once filled with function to ease open, and the gabled window to be fully revealed. As Helena shared, “We wanted to bring the trees from the garden into the interior, letting them change with the seasons and become part of everyday life.”

The atmosphere draws from her time in Bali. As she puts it, “I wanted something unique, a place where you don’t feel like you’re in the Hamptons.” This feeling comes through in specific choices—natural materials, generous daylight, and rhythmic timber details. The palette is restrained. Browns and beiges form the base, with black and deep green woven throughout, echoing warm wood, handcrafted finishes, and carefully selected antiques to create a calm, grounded atmosphere. “It’s very soothing,” she says. “Nothing too bright—everything just feels more relaxed.”There’s no staged sense of “retreat,” yet a slower rhythm quietly emerges.

Natalie discovered Helena Clunies-Ross Design on Instagram. “Her aesthetic is very close to mine—I felt right away that it would be a smooth collaboration.”Influenced by her background in fine art and art history, Helena Clunies-Ross’s approach does not rely on decorative layering. Instead, she focuses on how proportion, natural light, and materials come together to form a clear and balanced spatial order. She describes this way of working as “Calma”—less a style than an attitude of returning space to its essence.

The primary bedroom follows the same restrained approach: soft tones, full-height windows, and sliding partitions come together to create a quiet sleeping environment. A custom marble bathtub sits beside the bed, able to be separated by a sliding wall or left open. “When I wake up and see the bathtub, it feels like I’m back in Bali,” Natalie says.

The second bedroom opens upward in its spatial composition. The bed becomes the visual anchor, echoing the height of the pitched ceiling. Rather than using a traditional four-poster, the design responds to the roof’s geometry by subtly elevating the structure, with soft linen drapery falling around it to extend the vertical sense.Details around the bed remain restrained and layered: textiles and wood elements from different sources are brought together in tone and texture, allowing subtle variations to emerge within a calm atmosphere.

Natalie’s travels in Bali and across Southeast Asia bring an additional layer of sensory depth to the home. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the lower level, where wellness is not treated as an add-on, but integrated into everyday life. The gym, spa, sauna, meditation room, cinema, and speakeasy-style bar are arranged in sequence, allowing the experience to unfold gradually. Here, restoration is no longer an abstract idea, but something lived through daily rhythm.

The use of reclaimed timber and natural materials keeps this level aligned with the rest of the house—warm, grounded, and marked by a sense of time.Eastern sensibilities and modern refinement are not deliberately juxtaposed, but instead come together slowly through daily rituals, bodily perception, and spatial layering.

What is most compelling about this residence lies not in any singular sculptural gesture or expressive form, but in its continuous attempt to deepen the relationship between inhabitant and environment——to feel immersed in nature, while being gently held within a rational and restrained architectural framework. What ultimately emerges is a quieter, more conscious order of living. The house is not merely a space that contains life, but one that holds it—maintaining a quiet and steady balance between refuge and inspiration.
